ISBNPA Holds 1st Annual Meeting!

ISBNPA 2002 Opening plenary sessionThe International Society for Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity held its 1st annual meeting, entitled "Beyond the Cutting Edge" at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, University of Washington, Seattle Washington, July 12-13, 2002.

Jim Sallis presenting on environmental determinants of physical activityThe new Society brought together diverse nutrition and physical activity research with a common focus on behavior in an exciting 2-day program that included plenary sessions and symposia as well as referred oral and poster presentations. The meeting had a wonderful turnout with more than 100 submitted abstracts and 200 attendees, representing 10 countries. (View ISBNPA 2002 abstracts)

Among the conference highlights were a well attended breakfast roundtable on the new International Journal for Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity hosted by its editors, Simone French and Anthony Worsely, and a lively after-dinner panel discussion entitled "What are the causes of the worldwide epidemic of obesity and what are the responsibilities of academia, government, and industry to address it?"

ISBNPA Student Presentation Awards for excellent submissions were made to Marti Kubik, University of Minnesota, School of Public Health, for her work on "The Association of School-Level Environmental Factors with Individual-Level Dietary Practices of Young Adolescents" and to Shelley Tworoger, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, for her research entitled "Physical Activity Intervention for Post-menopausal Women."
